Brief Overview

Architecture for Humanity : DFW, along with 5 other AFH chapters are collaborating with Edge of Seven on the Solukhumbu Development Project to provide funding for several improvements to water, sanitation and schools in the Solukhumbu District of Nepal.  

All budget and improvement information provided has been updated as of September 5, 2011.  More in depth project budget estimations, renderings of proposed work and images of work that has already begun will be available for viewing at the event.

PURDU Community Water Supply and Sanitation 
(Budget $25,381 / Start September 1, 2011 / Finish October 15, 2011) 
  • Build a community water supply with one central tank for purification to support 60 households with bathing water
  • Build 6 community toilets to introduce basic sanitation concepts
  • Develop a family hygiene education program
  • Conduct trainings at the household level to all 300 members of the community to educate regarding good sanitation/hygiene practices in the home within 6 months
PHULELI Lower Secondary School Extension
(Budget $27,950 / Start November 15, 2011/ Finish January 15, 2012)

  • Build 2 room lower secondary school extension for the 6th and 7th graders to increase quality of education for current students
  • Build a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) within one year
  • Involve agricultural experts in the program to help locals increase their crop yields
BASA Higher Secondary School Extension
(Budget $55,470 / Start February 15, 2012 / Finish April 15, 2012)
  • Build 4 new classrooms to create opportunity for 150 more students/year
  • Construct a toilet facility, equipped with water supply, to create a private area for adolescent girls and female teachers
  • Equip bathrooms with washing and drying facilities for the special needs of menstrual management
  • Educate all female students about menstrual hygiene within one year
CHIWANG Primary School Project
(Budget $56,330 / Start May 15, 2012 / Finish July 15, 2012)

  • Build a new primary school campus, including 5 classrooms, 1 office, new toilets, and a water supply to create opportunity for 150 more
  • Lobby for government funding for 2 additional teachers
  • Collaborate with Room to Read to create a child-friendly learning environment filled with local language and English books
TAKSINDU Biogas Toilet Pilot
(Budget $48,913 / Start September 15, 2012 / Finish December 15, 2012)

  • Launch pilot program to build 30 biogas toilets which will harness gas produced from the fermentation of organic material for cooking fuel and electricity
  • Conduct market appraisal to understand the employment opportunities in the village, and possibly launch vocational training program
